Travelling...

I never thought I will move abroad because I was much more happy in India being around parents and friends. Also I have not been to many places for sightseeing other than college tours. But destiny took me here to UK. For some silly reason I never wanted an alliance from abroad, and I didnt want to marry a doctor. But God had someother plans for me. I got married to a doctor and now in UK. LOL!! But now absolutely NO regrets. I am really happy now having married a doctor. It was my silly childhood mindset that I was against doctors!

I was so fascinated by the beauty of UK when I first stepped. I liked the lifestyle here. People just enjoy their life. I have not seen anyone being at home during weekends. Weekends were so lively. Then we also planned for our holiday to Europe. I am lucky in a way having come to UK as I can see all places around Europe. My clever husband gave all the work to me like searching for cheap flights, good hotels, preparing itenerary etc. It was fun to organise a trip. We personally dont like to go through private tours because Europe is a place to walk around and enjoy the beauty created by God which is not served by private tours. Going alone always gives more privacy and we can spend more time in any place we want to which is not possible in private tours.

With proper planning, one can enjoy any trip without any problem. Because there are so many resources and information available on the net. And we get books from library where there are basic translation of words that are spoken in European countries which are quite useful. Here I will share some websites that are really useful for organising a trip. We have been successful in visitng so many places with the help of these websites and information.

* Cheap flights:
  1. http://www.ryanair.com/site/EN/
  2. http://www.easyjet.com/en/book/index.asp
  3. http://www.flybmi.com/bmi/en-gb/index.aspx
* Flight & Accommodation deals:
  1. http://www.expedia.co.uk/
  2. http://www.lastminute.com/
  3. http://www.travelsupermarket.com/
  4. http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/
* Hotel Reviews:
  1. http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk
This site gives reviews about hotels, travel guide, things to do, restaurants, map etc. We have been booking most of our hotels with reviews from this website, and our judgement from this site has never gone wrong.

* Attractions & Sight Seeing:
  1. http://www.lonelyplanet.com/
  2. http://www.worldtravelguide.net/

There are so many other sites which would give information about places but we have been using the above sites mostly. If there are any more sites which are really useful, I would be happy to add it here.

An Eye Opener.. Don't Waste Food

I recently came across this video. It is really an eye opener. However carefully I measure the amount of food I make, I end up having some left over food by the end of day. I used to throw it in the bin. I have teased my mom having her dinner with all the left overs of the day. But she used to say me, 'there are so many people in this world who die of hunger and who long for such good food, so food should not be wasted at any cost'. I was so playful those days that I only used to laugh at her but never thought about what she said. But now this video has changed me a lot. Now I realise the importance of my mom's words... I hope it will be an eye opener to everyone. Have a look at this video friends...

If you organise any parties or get-together's there will definitely be some food left out. Lets make sure we divide the left over food among the friends (who have come to the party) in some take away boxes so that it will be of use for them the next day. It is better than putting into the bin. I came across this in my husband's college get-together. All were happy to take the food home and at the same time no food was left out as waste..

Health & Fitness......

I got good response from many of my friends for my first blog. Being a first time blogger, I didnt expect such a good response. Thanks to all who motivated me with their comments. I think the topic really helped my blog reach so many people as most of them are really concerned about healthy food.

So I thought I ll write another blog related to it, and hence came up with this topic "Health & Fitness". Not sure how well this topic will suit my blog but still I am just going to write what comes to my mind, the tips from friends and that I have been following..

  1. During my childhood days I have seen my dad having 4-5 glasses of water in the morning as soon as he gets up. Seeing him I started the same habit without asking him why he drinks. Then later, I came to know that it hydrates our body and it gives our body a wake up call. Since then, till today I have the habit of having atleast 3 glasses everyday as soon as I wake up. It really makes me feel fresh and have a good start of the day.
  2. My aunt's mother-in-law looks very beautiful. Since my primary school days and until now, she looks just the same!!! I was wonderstruck when I saw her recently. She still has a very clear face, no wrinkles and no dark circles. She told me few years back, to start the habit of having fenugreek seeds (venthayam) soaked in water daily in the morning. I have never followed her advice. She said most of the problems will be cured by this fenugreek. It reduces the heat in the body, keeps us young, cures digestion related problems, controls heavy flow during periods and abates dysmenorrhea (painful periods). I haven't got the habit as yet lol!! But I hope this will be a good tip for those who can follow it regularly.
  3. A good exercise is very mandatory as part of our day today activities. A brisk walk in the morning before sunrise will freshen up the day and help us stay active the whole day. But in a country like UK where winter is extreme, its quite difficult to go out for a walk (atleast for me!). I recently saw an advertisement in an Indian channel where Abishek Bachan says "Walk & Talk". Though it sounded funny, I found it really useful. We all use to speak over phone atleast half an hour in a day. I started to walk when I am on the phone at home and it served me the purpose of having a good walk. So whoever is lazy to go for a walk outside or go for a gym can try this. heheee.....
  4. Eating a diet high in processed food increases the risk of depression, research suggests. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8334353.stm. Check this link from BBC which says people who eat more fruits and vegetables have very less percentage risk of depression than those who have processed & high fatty foods.
Therse are some of things I could think of. As and when I get any input from any friends I ll try to post it. Also friends do share your comments and tips so that it could be useful for everyone who read.

Food Food Food.....

Almost everyone in this world are food lovers so am I. Afterall we earn for good food and peaceful sleep... I became a food lover only after I came to UK because thats when I really missed my mom's food. The more I craved, the more I missed my mom ;) That was the begining of my cooking.
Thanks to my husband, who invited most of his friends home, which made a big difference in my life. I started loving the art of cooking. And I enjoyed the pleasure in having good food. Above all, the appreciations from friends were really motivating..
Later, I started exploring new items from the net, from my friends, and my personal experimentation. I realised its not only the taste that matters, its how healthy your food is which matters a lot.. So gradually I changed my cooking style into tasty and healthier ones. So I wished to share some healthy tips that I gathered all these days and that I implemented in my cooking as well because HEALTH IS WEALTH...
* V all know dhall is rich in protein. But do we know that the thoor dhall v get in market is a refined one. The fiber and rich protein content of dhall is actually removed in the process of refining. I am sure everyone must have come across Red / green lentils in supermarket. They are the ones that are not completely refined and is rich in fiber and protein. Making a sambar from red/green lentils will surely not taste like the sambar made of thoor dhall. But we can make a slight alteration by adding quarter portion of red or green lentil to the thoor dhall and cook. It taste like the exact sambar and also we can have the satisfaction of having some healthy fiber rich food. As time goes, you can add more of lentils and lessen the thoor dhall.. I have made it, we liked it very much..
* Pasta..... A v good italian recipe.. I am sure most of us like it. I have seen many friends (even me!!) cook pasta, when they are bored to cook any other stuffs which are time consuming. The cooking time of pasta matters. Then just adding sauce to it will make a whole dish. Also pasta is made of durrum wheat which is very good for health and makes a good tiffin at night. I slightly modified the pasta by adding chopped spring onions and some colored peppers and finaly chopped cilantro. It tasted great with an additional health factor to it!!!
* I always try and make sure I dont cook rice for dinner. Research says, having rice at dinner will tend to put more weight.. I find it really true. Initially when I came to UK, I lost the pattern of having food on time, my complete metabolism just changed. I faced gastric problems due to it which I didnt have till then.. Also my stomach was always bloated. I gradually changed my eating pattern. I ll try to have early dinner within 7pm and make sure there is no rice in our dinner. It will be a very light tiffin like chapathi's, pasta, upma, dosa, idly etc. Then I take lots of fruits and drink so much water. Now I dont face such problems that I had earlier.
* Smoothiess.... I have never heard of smoothie until I came to UK. I didnt like the one I got from supermarkets. Somehow I didnt like the taste. Then I myself started making my own smoothies at home. Any fruit blends easily with banana and it taste heavenly. I tried banana with apples, with strawberries, with blueberries.. It was tasting great and very filling. I tried to substitute this smoothie when I feel like having some junk snack in the evening. Its always good to have 2 vegetables and 3 different type of fruits everyday. So having a smoothie with 2 or 3 fruits will serve it and trust me it tastes great.....!!
* Also my friend here suggested me the idea of fasting a day in a week. I tried once and I felt it really good. I made some fresh juice at home. Smoothie or any fresh home made juice. I used to have that from morning till evening and have some v light soup or kanji at night. I felt soo good and felt my stomach very light.

These are v few things that I try to follow in my day today routine. If I gather some interesting healthy tips, I ll try to post it then and there....
